Activity on Council Land

How to apply to use Council land for events, weddings, gatherings, and more.

⚠️ Important Disclaimer: I, Shane Grocke, am rewriting this policy in plain English so you can quickly understand what it is about and what conditions usually apply. This is a guide only — the official Council policy and any permit conditions are what you must rely on.

What this policy is about

This policy explains how you can use Council land for short-term activities. Short-term usually means up to 6 months. Most activities are for one day or a short event.

Who this applies to

This applies to people, businesses, and community groups who want to use Council land. This includes events, weddings, gatherings, business activities, and filming.

Key Words Explained

  • Council — means the District Council of Yankalilla.
  • Council land — means land owned or managed by Council.
  • An activity — is any event, service, or use of the land, whether free or paid.

Event Types

Small events

Medium events

More than 151 people and need more planning like toilets, waste, and traffic control.

How Decisions Are Made

Council land is mainly for the community. Activities may be approved if they:

  • Other events happening at the same time
  • Environmental impact
  • Impact on the community such as noise and traffic

Approvals

Major events must be approved by Council. Small and medium events may be approved by Council staff under the law.

You Cannot

Run illegal activities
Promote tobacco, gambling, or violence
Damage land or environment
Stop public access without approval

Insurance

You must have public liability insurance that suits your activity.

After your activity

You must clean up and fix any damage. Council will inspect the area before and after your event.

Fees and bonds

You must pay fees before approval. You may also need to pay a bond. It may be used if damage occurs.

Permits

Permits are given in writing with conditions you must follow.

Using Council branding

You must get approval to use Council logos or branding.
