How Council plans, funds, and maintains its infrastructure and assets for the long term.

This policy explains how the District Council of Yankalilla manages its assets. It focuses on long-term planning, funding, and maintenance of infrastructure so services remain reliable and affordable for the community.

Purpose

Council aims to manage assets in a sustainable way — providing services at the right level, protecting assets, and making sure funding is available for the long term.

Asset Types

Bridges and related structures

Bridges and associated infrastructure across the district.

How Assets Are Managed

  • Use a lifecycle approach when planning and managing assets
  • Use assets efficiently to get the best value
  • Maintain assets so they continue to function properly
  • Monitor and review assets regularly
  • Use asset management plans and budgets to guide spending

Funding & Planning

  • Prepare asset management plans for major asset groups
  • Include costs in long-term financial planning
  • Prioritise renewal of existing assets
  • Only bring forward renewals if properly approved
  • Consider full lifecycle costs when making decisions

Other Important Points

New or upgraded assets

Before new assets or upgrades are approved, Council will complete a cost-benefit assessment to make sure the investment is justified.

Disposal of assets

Assets must be disposed of in line with Council's disposal policy.

Risk and inspections

Council will assess risks and inspect important assets regularly to maintain safety and service levels.

Community involvement

Changes to service levels will be discussed with the community before decisions are made.
