District & Town Entrance Signboards

Rules for adding temporary event signage to the district gateway and town arrival signs.

⚠️ Important Disclaimer: I, Shane Grocke, am rewriting this policy in plain English so you can quickly understand what it is about and what conditions usually apply. This is a guide only — the official Council policy and any permit conditions are what you must rely on.

What this policy is about

Council has installed District Gateway and Town Arrival Statement signboards throughout the district. These are the newer signs with the "Made By Nature Fleurieu Coast" branding. Each sign has space where temporary signage can be added to advertise local events and occasions.

This policy sets out the rules for adding temporary signage to those signs.

What Signs Does This Cover?

Only the newer District Gateway and Town Arrival Statement signs with the "Made By Nature Fleurieu Coast" branding.

This policy does NOT cover:

  • Older town entrance signs (these have been gradually replaced)
  • Locality signs (these do not have space for event advertising)

Which Signs Can Be Used For What?

Town Arrival signboards

For advertising local events such as market days, sporting finals, and community events.

District Gateway signboards

For advertising district-wide or regional events such as Festival Fleurieu, the Yankalilla Show, and similar.

Design Rules

Must not look like traffic signs, traffic lights, or safety signage
Text must be large enough and have enough colour contrast to be read at the speed limit
Keep it simple — easy to understand at a glance so it does not distract drivers
No controversial, offensive, or illegal content
No commercial or company logos
Signs must not be illuminated (no lights)

Installation Rules

You must have an approved permit before installing any signage
Nothing on the sign should be able to fly off and go through a windscreen if hit by a vehicle
Think about how the sign will be repaired or replaced if it gets damaged
Signs are only for local or regional events (markets, festivals, sporting finals, etc.)
Signs must be removed as soon as possible after the event — and no more than 48 hours after the event ends

How to Get Approval

You need to apply and receive a permit before putting up any temporary signage. Your application must include:

  • Your proposed sign design
  • The dates you want to display the sign
  • Details of the event being advertised
  • The name of the person responsible for putting up and taking down the signage

Applications are approved by the Group Manager Economy & Community (or their delegate), and a permit will be issued to you.

Complaints & Review

If you have a complaint about this policy or how it has been applied, put it in writing to the Chief Executive Officer of Council.

This policy is reviewed every five years, or sooner if needed. It was last reviewed in November 2024.
