Trees Management Policy

How Council manages street trees, park trees, and how to request tree work in the district.

⚠️ Important Disclaimer: I, Shane Grocke, am rewriting this policy in plain English so you can quickly understand what it is about and what conditions usually apply. This is a guide only — the official Council policy and any permit conditions are what you must rely on.

What this policy is about

This policy explains how the District Council of Yankalilla manages trees on Council-owned land, including street trees, park trees, and trees on reserves. It covers planting, maintenance, pruning, and removal.

Why Trees Matter

Trees provide shade, improve air quality, support wildlife, and make our townships more attractive. Council is committed to protecting and growing its tree canopy for the benefit of the whole community.

What Council Does

Plants and maintains trees on public land
Inspects trees regularly for health and safety
Prunes trees to maintain safety and appearance
Removes trees that are dead, diseased, or pose a safety risk
Replaces removed trees where appropriate

Requesting Tree Work

If you are concerned about a Council tree near your property, you can contact Council to request an inspection or tree work. Council will assess the request and respond based on safety, tree health, and available resources.

Important: You must not prune, damage, or remove Council trees without permission.

Trees on Private Land

This policy covers trees on Council-owned land only. Trees on private land are the responsibility of the landowner.

If you are unsure whether a tree is on Council or private land, contact Council for clarification.

Heritage & Significant Trees

Some trees may be identified as significant due to their age, species, or cultural value. These trees receive additional protection and any work on them requires special consideration.

Complaints & Review

If you have a complaint about this policy or how it has been applied, put it in writing to the Chief Executive Officer of Council.

This policy is reviewed regularly and updated when needed.
