Yank/Normy Bypass

Main South Road (and Williss Drive) are increasingly becoming overloaded, leading to higher maintenance costs, and safety concerns.

We need a bypass road, to bypass Yankalilla and Normanville

Between 2017 and 2022, the section of Main South Road between Fitzgerald Road, Yankalilla and the boundary of Normanville (south of Hobart Memorial Lookout) has seen a total 38 Accidents, with 28 Casualties, 5 Serious and 2 Fatalities.

There are an estimated 6,000 vehicles per day travelling on Mian South Road between Main St, Yankalilla and Main Road, Normanville.

I suggest that a bypass road is built, to divert the majority of this traffic away from the towns of Yankalilla and Normanville. Most of this traffic will be passing or freight traffic anyway, and council can sign post appropriately about the towns, to capture the tourist market and attract these people into the townships.

Proposal A – Southern Route

I propose a diversion of Main South Road near the Smith Hill Road intersection, with the exact location to be determined. The new road would run to the East of Yankalilla, crossing Inman Valley Road near Doctors Hill Road and linking up with my proposed Bulky Goods location. The road would then travel south of Yankalilla, crossing Bethal and Hay Flat Roads before running East of the Lady Bay area and rejoining Main South Road north of the Wirrina turnoff.

To improve safety, I recommend adding one overtaking lane in each direction. The existing road through Yankalilla and Normanville could be converted into a local road under the control of the DCY, with Hay Flat, Bethal, and Inman Valley Roads upgraded to provide access to the townships.

Intersections should be made safe via a staggered or staggered and skewed intersection – along the lines of the Riddoch Highway with the Penola Bypass – pictured to the left.
